Description

The Goombas are otherwise normal people who are afflicted by a parasitic fungus. The fungus, named Go\'omba by the natives of the region where it was discovered, is virtually invisible to the naked eye and emits spores upon being disturbed. The spores, when they touch skin, attach and spread all over the victim's body. After a short period, the fungus becomes inert and can no longer spread through skin-to-skin contact except on the hands, feet, and mouth-increased movement of air near these areas (breathing and constant movement) causes the fungus to change into the spore-emitting variety in these regions. As soon as they stop releasing spores, the fungus feeds on the victim\'s dead skin cells in a painless manner. Eventually, the fungus kills the victim, but the afflicted may have years or even decades before the fungus begins to take on the leprosy-like symptoms that indicate this is the case.

The fungus grows in dry, dark environments, putting desert archaeologists and explorers in danger whenever they venture into a cave or tomb. The victims of the desert strain are typically allowed in public after they are confirmed noncontagious by practiced doctors, but are made to wear special clothing which stops the spread of the spores from their hands, feet, and breath.

Bowser\'s use of the fungus in a cultured strain is well-known. The variety used to make the Goombas in Bowser\'s army is infinitely more dangerous than the natural form. The Koopa-bred Goomba fungus is injected into the bloodstream and causes psychosis, loss of hearing and sight, and causes the mental condition of the victim to deteriorate to that of a wild animal. The victim of this war-bred Goomba fungus becomes a walking carrier, emitting the spores of the fungus from their pores. Upon hitting air, the bred fungus dies quickly, but if it reaches the skin of a nearby creature, it grows and kills the new host quickly and painfully. If it enters an open wound or otherwise enters the blood of a new host, the cycle begins anew. These Goombas are war-machines of the most insidious nature-fortunately, basic skin covering prevents affliction.

Shown here is the cap-wearing victim of the natural Go\'omba spores. Many afflicted by the spores lead rich lives, but others resort to cutting throats (a metaphorical phrase) or lives of crime, developing fatalistic attitudes towards the world.
